From Harriet Tubman’s daring missions and the legacy of the Penn Center to Gullah Geechee storytelling, Civil War forts, and the powerful new International African American Museum, students will explore the roots of resilience, resistance, and freedom. Sample Itinerary: 
Day 1 - The Journey Begins - Discovering Heroes of the Past
  • Step into history as we travel to Beaufort, South Carolina — the heart of the Lowcountry.
  • Begin with a unique Oyster Experience where students will learn how these small mollusks play a big role in our environment.
  • Then, it’s on to the quirky and fascinating Kazoo Factory, where music meets invention!
  • In the afternoon, dive deep into African American heritage on a Guided Walking Tour of Beaufort. You’ll stand in the footsteps of icons like Harriet Tubman and Robert Smalls, visit the Reconstruction Era National Historical Park, and understand the impact of the Civil War on the region.
  • Cap off the day with a delicious Southern Welcome Dinner at local favorite restaurant before checking in to your hotel to rest and relax for the night. (D)
Day 2 - Gullah Culture, Dolphins, and Living History
  • Enjoy breakfast at the hotel this morning.
  • Start the day on an epic boat cruise along Beaufort’s waterways, with dolphins, marsh views, & stories from centuries past awaiting around each bend.
  • After, immerse yourself in Gullah Geechee heritage with a Shrimp Boil Feast and live storytelling from a cultural interpreter who brings “Tales from the Land of Gullah” to life.
  • See the historic Penn Center, one of the first schools for formerly enslaved people, and learn about the resilience of a community that shaped American history.
  • Later, explore the hidden stories of Fort Fremont and enjoy a locally-owned dinner where the menu is just as rich as the culture surrounding it. (B, L, D)
Day 3 - Soulful Savannah ~ Legacy & Art in the Garden City
  • Enjoy breakfast at the hotel this morning.
  • Welcome to Savannah! This unforgettable day kicks off with a city tour that focuses on African American contributions and Gullah influence across the city’s historic squares and architecture.
  • After lunch at the iconic Forsyth Park, take a deep dive into Reconstruction history at the Beach Institute and the King-Tisdell Cottage. Here, you’ll learn about the importance of education post-emancipation and participate in a hands-on indigo dyeing workshop where students can bring home their own cultural keepsake.
  • Conclude with a Southern-style dinner. (B, L, D)
Day 4 - Charleston Reflection ~ Remembering our Roots
  • Enjoy breakfast at the hotel this morning prior to checking out.
  • Begin with a guided tour of McLeod Plantation, a solemn and insightful look at life before and after emancipation.
  • Then, explore the International African American Museum in Charleston, a transformative experience connecting past to present through stories of resilience, resistance, and brilliance.
  • After a hearty dinner stop, head home with new knowledge and a deeper appreciation for the roots of freedom and the voices that shaped our nation. (B, L, D)
